Our "Crime Meetings" are online meetings focused purely on forensic and criminological issues. The Department of Criminalistics at the University in Piła organizes regular meetings and lectures with thought-provoking guests.
- On March 15, 2022, an online lecture by the world-famous criminologist and sociologist, Professor Sveinung Sandberg, was held for students and employees of the Stanisław Staszic State College in Piła (since March 1, 2022 the Stanisław Staszic University of Applied Sciences). The event received the patronage of Professor Stanisław Batawia Polish Criminological Society. Speaking in English, Professor Sandberg gave a lecture entitled 'Methods for doing qualitative research in hostile environments'. As part of the lecture, Professor discussed the role of qualitative interview ethnography in collecting data from hard-to-reach populations (such as drug users, drug dealers, and violent crime perpetrators). The presented challenging research sites included street drug deal sites, marginalized crime-prone communities and prisons. Professor Sandberg also characterized the challenges and opportunities and ethical concerns associated with conducting research in difficult fields.
- On February 16, 2022, a meeting was organized with the journalist, political scientist and philosopher Robert Małecki - author of crime novels, including "The Weakest Link".
- On July 1, 2021 an online meeting with a retired police officer took place. Mr Krzysztof Sypniewski, a former forensics technician, gave the meeting the title: "A confession of a technician". He told us who the forensics technician is and how to become one, what their job is and how to cope with the necessity of encountering death.
- Another meeting took place on June 18, 2021. The lecture entitled "Criminalization of migration, or how the law hurts migrants" was delivered by dr hab. Witold Klaus, Professor with the Polish Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Criminology (the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences).The organizers of the meeting were the Department of Forensics of PUSS in Piła (since March 1, 2022 the State University of Applied Sciences in Piła) and students' research club, "Crimen".
- On May 10, 2021, there was a lecture by Paweł Radziszewicz, Ph.D. from Collegium Balticum in Szczecin. Mr Paweł Radziszewicz worked with difficult youth for 23 years, during which for 10 years as a headmaster. The speaker talked about modern rehabilitation systems, symbolic interactionism, pedagogy of experiences, and creative rehabilitation. It was these elements that Mr Radziszewicz used to work with minors in the Youth Shelter in Szczecin.
- A special edition of our meetings was held on April 24, when Tim Clark, Ph.D. (University of Texas) discussed American-style criminal profiling. The speaker characterized the criminal profiling process using research results and own experience. Mr Clark emphasized both the strengths of profiling and the risks involved.
- On April 20, 2021 there was a meeting with dr hab. Dagmara Woźniakowska-Fajst from the Department of Criminology of the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The speaker gave a lecture entitled "Without roots and wings, or juvenile delinquency." The organizers of the event were the Department of Forensics of PUSS in Piła (since March 1, 2022 the State University of Applied Sciences in Piła) and students' research club, "Crimen".
- A meeting devoted to minors in Mexican cartels included a lecture conducted by Professor dr hab. Piotr Chomczyński. It took place on March 29, 201, and its organizers were the Department of Forensics of PUSS in Piła (since March 1, 2022 the State University of Applied Sciences in Piła) and students' research club, "Crimen".
